Your most important address is your website

How to live anywhere and run a business online

Have you ever dreamed of escaping city life? Getting more acquainted with the great outdoors? You’ve undoubtedly experienced a post-vacation feeling where you’ve asked yourself, ‘Why can’t I live on holiday all the time? Do you think it’s possible to have the best of both worlds?’

Breaking the norm

My partner and I have long dreamed of moving closer to the beach. For me, the thought of a sunrise surf session before the working day sounds so humbling and even enlightening. However, running a design studio leaves me with a feeling that perhaps I need to stay close to the cultural hub of the city. A feeling that I need to stay ‘connected’ or ‘in touch.’

The best of both worlds - Mentors approval

I posed the question to my business mentor and they hit me back with this;

‘The most important address you have is your website.’

It’s not all talk either. My mentor is a living example that it can be done. They have a successful design studio located in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne and live an hour away on the beautiful coast of the Mornington Peninsula. They’ve been able to balance flexible office hours and remote teamwork whilst growing their business. If the global pandemic taught us anything about business, it’s that businesses and the people who support them are very capable of working remotely.

You can live wherever you want

The life of a digital nomad used to excite me, the thought of leveraging a low-cost lifestyle with remote work always seemed like such a smart way to improve your financial situation and possibly live a happier more balanced lifestyle at the same time. It’s not uncommon to find people living in vans that have been transformed into a home and office that is on the move. They are experiencing all the excitement of travel whilst supporting themselves with an online business. Some of my favourite examples of this are travel hackers - Kara and Nate or online surf coach - Kale Brock (Kales Brocolli). These are great examples of people who took their passion and discovered a way to turn it into a business.

How to launch your online business

I launched Goodfifty in 2020 in the early months of a global pandemic. Without really realising it I had started an online business. Thanks to the help of online tools GoDaddy and Webflow, It was super easy to buy a domain, design, build and host a website for my new business.

It’s possible to start an online business for less than $100 in less than one month. If you’ve got an idea for a business and need a website, which let’s face it - every business does, I highly recommend Webflow. You don’t need any experience in building websites. They have a bunch of templates that are easily customised along with one of the best tutorial video experiences I have ever come across. As a designer, I’ve had experience designing websites for clients but always felt the coding and build to be beyond my capabilities. With Webflow I was able to complete the entire website myself with no experience. After designing and building a website for my business and this blog, I now help design and build websites for my clients' businesses too. Webflow is by far the easiest platform I’ve found for me to be in control of my website and help empower my clients to be in control of their websites too.

To make your business even more professional. You can get a custom domain name (yourbusiness.com) on GoDaddy and link the website you've built in Webflow to your domain with a simple click.
